Success Story: Nick Lewis
Project: Independent Film, “Rise and Shine”
Launched on: Kickstarter
Funds Raised: $220,000+
Nick Lewis is an attorney practicing law full-time in San Diego. He specializes in litigation and transaction work (and after the making of Rise & Shine can add entertainment law as well). He and Co-Director/Producer Ranko Tutulugdzija made Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story to have their friend’s story told.
Ranko and Nick met Jay in college, where at the time he was a talented soccer player who had yet to fully blossom. After college, Jay went to England to pursue his dreams of playing professionally without a soccer resume to speak of, just a passport, $1500, and a backpack full of dreams. Jay would end up fulfilling his dreams, taking one of the most unique paths to the 2010 World Cup.
Six months prior to the World Cup, Nick and Ranko decided they needed to document Jay’s story. With no prior filmmaking experience, the two set out on a year and a half journey covering three continents, following their subject from his Green Bay roots all the way to the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
Rise & Shine became the highest crowd-funded independent film ever, raised over $220,000 on kickstarter.com. The project had over 2,000 people contribute, from celebrities to large organizations to everyday people around the world.
The film played in over 140 theaters in the United States and played nationwide in the UK. It recently secured international television, VOD, SVOD, and retail distribution.
It is amazing what the power of the mind and a will to succeed can do.

Success Story: Tiamo De Vettori
Project: CDs “Back to Love” and “Living the Lyrics”
100% Fan Funded
Funds Raised: $35,000
Like most independent singer/songwriters frustrated with the lack of resources and money available to release their own studio quality CD, Tiamo began thinking like a “music-preneur” and everything changed.
Inspiring his relatively small fan base (1,500 fans) to rally around raising funds to produce his new CDs, Tiamo’s last 2 full CD releases have been 100% fan funded totaling $35,000. More importantly, Tiamo has cultivated a sense of community around his music where his listeners feel like their input and support make all the difference. And while Tiamo advocates for public crowdfunding sites, he was able to raise funds on his own without needing to use 3rd party sites like kickstarter.com.
Currently, Tiamo performs for audiences of up to 15,000 people and recently won San Diego and L.A. Music Award’s “Singer/Songwriter of the Year” awards. Yet Tiamo’s passion goes well beyond his music as he now speaks at music conferences and colleges about how unsigned musicians can make a great full-time living with their music in creative ways.
